Whales in Raja Ampat

Killer Whales in Raja Ampat by Heike Vester / Ocean-Sounds

How many whales are there in Raja Ampat? When are they there, is there a season to see them? Where can we find them? What are they doing here? Where do they migrate? Where and what do they feed on and where do they have their young? How long do they stay here, and do they come back every year?
… these are just a few of the many questions I get when I tell people about our planned project in Raja Ampat.
Well, nobody knows and that is exactly our goal to find out, so we can understand their role in the entire ecosystem of Raja Ampat better and can protect them in these busy waters. You can’t protect what you don’t understand.

We know of at least 17 species of marine mammals that inhabit the waters of Raja Ampat, some are local others migrate. They are definitely worth protecting!

At the moment we are meeting with possible local partners to involve them in the long-term monitoring project. We have gained a lot of interest and within the next 2 months we should be able to tell you more about how feasible our plan to do a marine mammal monitoring program will be… please follow our news!
